Aggregate

Blue Planet produces coarse and fine aggregates containing sequestered CO2, transforming the global built environment into a carbon sink.

BLUE PLANET AGGREGATE

All Blue Planet aggregate is tested extensively to ASTM performance specifications, and has been shown to perform comparably or better than existing materials.

Blue Planet produces two core aggregate products:

  • CaCO3 aggregate – a synthetic limestone, contains 44% CO2.

  • Upcycled RCA aggregate – made from the extraction of alkalinity & calcium from waste concrete

Blue Planet CaCO3 aggregate sequesters so much CO2 in concrete, it makes your entire building carbon negative.

Blue Planet CaCO3 Aggregate

  • Blue Planet aggregate is synthetic limestone [CaCO3] that has lithified to form limestone rock

  • Each tonne of CO2-sequestered limestone traps 440 kilograms of carbon dioxide, preventing it from accumulating in the atmosphere.

  • Each 100lbs of aggregate contains 44lbs of sequestered CO2.  Once the “carbon costs” of the production process are counted, the net CO2 sequestered in the aggregate is 40%, or 40lbs in 100 lbs of aggregate.

  • As a manufactured aggregate it is possible to control the physical properties meaning the it can be lightweight or normal weight depending on the requirements of the concrete.

  • Both coarse and fine aggregate can be produced using the Blue Planet process.

Upcycled Aggregate

  • Upcycled Aggregate is a by-product of demolished and returned concrete that has been through a calcium extraction process for Blue Planet’s carbon dioxide sequestered limestone.

  • This aggregate is useful in most concrete mixes, and is well indurated and harder than traditional recycled aggregates due to the uniform process of Blue Planet’s reformation step.

  • Upcycled Aggregate offers significant benefit compared to virgin aggregate by adding recycled content value, and the avoidance of CO2 related to mining and transportation.

  • All concrete typically absorbs a few percent of it's mass from atmospheric CO2 during its lifetime, so when it is demolished, that previously absorbed and mineralized CO2 remains incorporated

The Urban Quarry

  • Quarrying for aggregate is by far the largest extractive industry on earth resulting in the direct destruction of millions of acres of farmland and virgin habitat as well as dredging of rivers and the seabed.

  • At the same time more construction and demolition waste is generated than any other waste.

  • By using returned and demolished concrete as a feedstock and generating a high quality upcycled aggregate as a byproduct Blue Planet's technology enables the closing of the biggest possible circle in the circular economy.

Concrete

BLUE PLANET CONCRETE

Concrete is the second most consumed material on earth, second only to water. Concrete is made from three key components: aggregate, cement, & water.

Blue Planet concrete CaCO3 aggregate sequesters so much CO2 in concrete, it makes your entire building carbon negative.

A Paradigm Shift

  • Until now the focus of climate conscious architects has been to reduce the amount of concrete in buildings while for structural engineers it has been cement reduction in concrete via the use the use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM)

  • Blue Planet concrete is carbon negative meaning that the more concrete that is used the more carbon stored and it can do so without needing to alter the cement quantity or type.

  • Using Blue Planet concrete can turn any highway or high-rise into a carbon sink performing a valuable societal service.

Same Strength, No Carbon Footprint

  • External and in-house testing has shown Blue Planet CaCO3 Aggregate performs comparably or better to quarried lightweight aggregate such as pumice and carbon intensive
manufactured aggregate such as expanded clay.

  • Blue Planet Upcycled RCA performs significantly better than recycled concrete.

Reflectance

SOLAR REFLECTANCE

  • Limestone produced by the Blue Planet process exhibits very high solar reflectance which makes it an ideal material for roofing shingles or high albedo surfaces.

  • Solar reflectance is the ratio of solar energy that falls on a surface to the amount reflected. It is measured with a  a scale of 0 (not reflective) to 1: (100 percent reflective).

  • Roofing shingles made with Blue Planet solar reflecting granules exceed LEED requirements with a solar reflectance of at least 0.73 – nearly 3 times the reflectance of average roof shingles.

  • This can help decrease the amount of heat transferred into a building. This not only helps keep interior areas cooler and reduces the strain on any home cooling devices, it also reduces electricity usage and power plant emissions associated with cooling.

  • Blue Planet’s technology allows both white colors, as well as a palette of other colors that are highly reflective
